- They want personal details or a code. Government agencies don't call out of the blue for your Social Security number, and you should never read back a one-time code texted to your phone.
- A recording says to press a key. Hang up instead. The FTC says pressing numbers can lead to more robocalls.
If the caller claims to be your bank, a utility or a government office, hang up and call the number printed on your statement or the organization's official website. Report scam calls through the FTC's ReportFraud.ftc.gov site.

To stop a number from calling again, block it. On an iPhone, open the Phone app, tap Recents, tap the number (or the Info button in Classic view), scroll down and tap Block Caller.

Every call to a 626 number needs the area code, including calls between two phones in the same city. The rule traces back to July 16, 2020, when the FCC designated 988 as the three-digit code for the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline.
Because 626 already had local numbers beginning with 988, seven-digit dialing would have conflicted with the new code, so the region moved to ten-digit dialing on October 24, 2021.
- Within 626: dial 1 + 626 + the seven-digit number. The CPUC describes California's change as 1+10-digit dialing.
- From elsewhere in the US or Canada: dial 1 + 626 + the seven-digit number, the usual long-distance format inside North America.

The pending overlay would not add a dialing step, since callers already include the area code. The CPUC's 626 area code page says any new code would be introduced on top of the existing region, and overlays generally leave existing numbers unchanged.
