Where Is the 321 Area Code?
Area code 321 is a Florida code with two jobs. On the Atlantic coast it serves Brevard County by itself, the stretch known as the Space Coast. Inland, it is one of three codes shared by Orlando and the counties around it.
That split personality goes back to the relief plan for 407 that the Florida Public Service Commission (PSC) approved in 1999. According to the planning letter from the North American Numbering Plan Administrator (NANPA), Brevard County was carved out of 407 and given 321 outright, while the Orlando counties kept 407 and received 321 as an extra code on the same map. Twenty years later, 689 was added to the Orlando side only.

Cities and Counties in the 321 Area Code
NANPA's 1999 planning letter lists the telephone rate areas that moved from 407 to 321 in Brevard County and the ones that stayed in the Orlando overlay region. A rate area is a billing zone named after a town, so its edges don't match city limits exactly.

How 321 Was Created: A Split and an Overlay at Once
The number itself was a local idea. Titusville data programmer Ozzie Osband connected the digits to rocket countdowns and presented the idea to the Florida PSC at a September 24, 1998, meeting in Orlando, Spectrum News 13 reported. The code went into effect on November 1, 1999, and Governor Jeb Bush placed the first call to Kennedy Space Center.
NANPA's planning letter PL-NANP-168, dated April 7, 1999, called the approved plan a Split Boundary Extension Concentrated Overlay and carried it out in two phases:
- Phase one, the Orlando area: permissive ten-digit dialing began April 1, 1999, ten digits became mandatory for local calls on December 1, 1999, and the earliest effective date for 321 exchange codes in the overlay was January 15, 2000.
- Phase two, Brevard County: the coast split from 407, with permissive dialing from November 1, 1999. From October 1, 2000, a Brevard number dialed with 407 went to an intercept message instead of connecting.
After the split, calls inside Brevard's 321 could still be dialed with seven digits, a habit that lasted another two decades. The Orlando side needed more numbers first: the PSC approved 689 as an all-services overlay for the 407/321 region, and new lines there could get 689 numbers from June 4, 2019. AT&T's customer notice stated that the part of 321 serving Brevard County was not affected and would not receive 689.
321 Area Code Time Zone (Eastern Time)
Both halves of the 321 area keep Eastern Time, so Titusville, Melbourne, Orlando and Kissimmee always show the same clock. There is no second time zone anywhere in the code's territory.
Eastern Standard Time (EST, UTC-5) applies in winter. Clocks move forward at 2:00 a.m. on the second Sunday in March for Eastern Daylight Time (EDT, UTC-4) and fall back at 2:00 a.m. on the first Sunday in November.

- The call is unexpected and the number isn't one you know.
- The caller rushes you to decide on the spot or threatens a penalty.
- You're asked to pay by gift card, wire transfer, cryptocurrency or a payment app, or to read back a one-time code.
- A recording asks you to press a number to reach a person or to be removed from a list.
When in doubt, hang up and call the company or agency at a number you look up yourself, on a statement or its official website. Don't press keys during a robocall; the FTC says that can lead to more of them. Block repeat numbers through your phone's settings, your carrier's tools or a call-blocking app.

Ten digits are now required for local calls in every part of 321. The Orlando overlay region has dialed that way since December 1, 1999. Brevard County kept seven-digit local calls until the national 988 change: 321 in Brevard was one of 82 area codes that had to adopt ten-digit dialing, with permissive dialing from April 24, 2021, and ten digits mandatory from October 24, 2021.
