786 Area Code: Miami, Florida Location and Time Zone

Introduction

The 786 area code is one of three codes for Miami-Dade County and the Florida Keys, at the southeastern tip of Florida. It has no territory of its own: 786 was laid over the older 305 code in 1998, and a third code, 645, has shared the same map since 2023.

Where Is the 786 Area Code?

Area code 786 covers Miami-Dade County and the Florida Keys, the island chain where nearly all of Monroe County's residents live. Put simply, the area code 786 location in the USA is Miami-Dade and the Keys, not Florida as a whole.

The exception is mainland Monroe County, most of it inside Everglades National Park and almost uninhabited, which uses area code 239 instead.

Only two counties are involved. Miami-Dade County, where Miami is the county seat and the largest city, makes up most of the area. The Keys part of Monroe County, whose county seat is Key West, covers the rest.

786 Area Code Time Zone (Eastern Time)

The whole 786 area is on Eastern Time. Florida does use a second time zone, but only in part of the Panhandle in the state's northwest, far from Miami-Dade and the Keys.

Florida also observes daylight saving time. Miami-Dade and the Keys keep Eastern Standard Time (UTC-5) in winter and Eastern Daylight Time (UTC-4) from the second Sunday in March until the first Sunday in November, the same clock New York and Atlanta follow.

Demand kept rising, and in February 2022 the Florida Public Service Commission approved a third area code for the region. Area code 645 was activated on August 4, 2023, before prefixes in 305 and 786 were expected to run out, and new lines anywhere in the area may now get a 645 number. Existing 305 and 786 numbers did not change.

No. 786 is an area code in the North American Numbering Plan, which uses country code 1, shared by the United States, Canada and places such as Puerto Rico, Jamaica and Guam. The US country code +1 page shows how these numbers are built.

No other country uses 786 either: in the ITU's list of country codes, everything starting with 7 falls under +7, shared by Russia and Kazakhstan. If a call feels wrong, hang up without pressing any keys. Report scams at ReportFraud.ftc.gov with the number that called, the caller ID shown, and the date and time. Unwanted sales calls can go to the National Do Not Call Registry, though the registry does not stop scammers.

Within South Florida, dial all ten digits for local calls, whether the other number starts with 786, 305 or 645, and add a 1 in front for long distance. Only three-digit numbers such as 911 and 988 skip the area code.
