561 Area Code: Palm Beach County, Florida Location and Time Zone

Introduction

The 561 area code is the phone code for Palm Beach County, Florida, including West Palm Beach, Boca Raton, Jupiter and Belle Glade. Since March 10, 2023, it has shared the county with a second code, 728, and local calls there need all ten digits.

Where Is the 561 Area Code?

Area code 561 is in southeast Florida, and its map matches a single county. The Florida Public Service Commission (PSC) describes the 561/728 area simply as Palm Beach County. That makes it one of the easier Florida codes to place: a local number assigned anywhere from Boca Raton and Jupiter to Belle Glade and South Bay starts with 561 or, for some newer lines, 728.

The code does not reach Miami-Dade County. Miami and the Florida Keys use 305 and its overlays, covered in our 305 area code guide. The Treasure Coast, which once used 561, has had its own code, 772, since 2002.

Keep in mind that caller ID shows where a number was assigned, not where the person calling is sitting. Someone who moved from Wellington to Denver can keep a 561 cell number for years, and a scammer can fake one outright.

Cities and Counties in the 561 Area Code

Palm Beach County has 39 incorporated municipalities, according to the county government, and West Palm Beach is the county seat. Because the PSC defines the 561/728 area by county, all of them are in it, along with the unincorporated neighborhoods between them. Some of the better-known places:

• West Palm Beach, plus Riviera Beach, Lake Park and the town of Palm Beach
• Boca Raton, Delray Beach, Boynton Beach and Highland Beach
• Jupiter, Tequesta, Juno Beach, North Palm Beach and Palm Beach Gardens
• Wellington, Royal Palm Beach and Greenacres
• Belle Glade and South Bay

A 728 number in Delray Beach is as local as a 561 number on the same street, since both codes cover the entire county. 561 Area Code Time Zone (Eastern Time)

Palm Beach County observes Eastern Time, so every 561 and 728 number shares one clock. Standard time there (EST) is five hours behind Coordinated Universal Time, written UTC-5.

Daylight saving time starts at 2:00 a.m. local time on the second Sunday of March, moving the county to EDT (UTC-4), and ends at 2:00 a.m. on the first Sunday of November. 561 and 728: One Area, Two Area Codes

An overlay adds a second area code to the same map instead of redrawing boundaries. Expecting 561 to run short of numbers, the Florida PSC approved 728 as an overlay for Palm Beach County in December 2021. Beginning March 10, 2023, customers asking for new service, an extra line or, in some cases, moving their service could receive a 728 number. According to the PSC's consumer summary:

• Existing phone numbers, including their 561 area code, stay the same.
• Call prices, coverage areas and other rates don't change because of the overlay.
• A call that was local stays local, however many digits you dial.
• 561 and 728 exist side by side throughout the county, with no boundary between them.

The dialing side was simpler than in many overlays. Palm Beach County already had to use ten digits for local calls by October 24, 2021, because 561 was on the national list of area codes switching for the 988 crisis line, so callers were already dialing the way an overlay requires when 728 arrived.

How 561 Was Formed: 1996 and 2002

Palm Beach County numbers used 407 until 1996, when 561 began in a split from 407, the code now associated mostly with the Orlando area. In 2002 a second split moved the Treasure Coast off 561 and onto 772, leaving 561 with the Palm Beach County territory the PSC describes today.

Is 561 a Country Code? What That Search Really Means

The three digits are a Florida area code; the country code sits in front of them as +1. That +1 isn't unique to the United States: Canada uses it too, and so do several Caribbean countries, which add their own area code after it, such as +1 246 for Barbados.

When a form, messaging app or CRM asks for an international format, write a Palm Beach County number as +1 561 555 0142, or without spaces as +15615550142. 561 Area Code vs ZIP Codes

An area code and a ZIP code answer different questions. The 561 code identifies a telephone numbering area, while ZIP codes are the US Postal Service's delivery codes, and a city the size of Boca Raton or West Palm Beach has several of them. How to Dial a 561 Phone Number

Since October 24, 2021, local calls in Palm Beach County have required the area code. That applies whether you're calling a 561 or a 728 number, and to calls between the two codes.

• Local call in the county: 561 or 728 plus the seven-digit number, for example 561-555-0142.
• Long-distance call from the county: 1 + area code + seven-digit number.
• Calling 561 from elsewhere in the US: 1 + 561 + seven-digit number.
• Calling from outside North America: your country's exit code, then 1, 561 and the number.

Short codes still work: dial 911 for emergencies, and three-digit services such as 211, 311, 411, 611, 711 and 811 remain available where your community offers them. The PSC also asked customers to program full ten-digit numbers into alarm systems, medical alert devices, speed dialers, call-forwarding settings, fax machines and PBXs, and to make sure that equipment accepts 728 as a valid area code.
