412, 724 and 878: The Split and the Overlay

Until 1997 Pennsylvania had just four area codes, and 412 covered the state's southwestern corner. By order entered July 15, 1997, the PUC split that region: the Pittsburgh metropolitan core kept 412, and the surrounding communities moved to the new 724, which was activated on February 1, 1998.

Ten-digit dialing came with it: calls within and between 412 and 724 have needed the area code since July 2001. For years, though, 878 existed mostly on paper. In 2013 the PUC said 878 numbers would be assigned in the 724 area first, and in the 412 area only once 412's own supply of prefixes runs out.

412 is not a country code. It is an area code inside country code +1, the code shared by the United States, Canada and the other North American Numbering Plan members. International callers reach Pittsburgh by dialing their exit code, then 1, then 412 and the local number, written as +1 412 555 0172.
