415 Area Code: San Francisco Location and Time Zone

Where Is the 415 Area Code?

Area code 415 is the San Francisco area code, but it stops well short of the whole Bay Area. The California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) describes its territory as the City and County of San Francisco, most of Marin County and a small portion of San Mateo County.

The map was once far larger. In AT&T's first nationwide numbering plan in 1947, 415 covered central California from Sacramento to Bakersfield. A 1950 redraw moved Sacramento to 916 and Bakersfield to 213, and later splits did the rest.

One oddity: in early-1950s trials of direct long-distance dialing, customers in Englewood, New Jersey, reached San Francisco using area code 318, which also served some areas north of the Golden Gate. The whole Bay Area went back to 415 in 1953.

Cities and Counties in the 415 Area Code

If you are asking what city area code 415 belongs to, the answer is San Francisco, a combined city and county. The code also reaches most of Marin County and a sliver of San Mateo County.

The 1997 boundary with 650 mostly follows the county line between San Francisco and San Mateo. The exceptions are small: an area east of the San Francisco Golf Club went to 650, while portions of Brisbane and Daly City kept 415. 415 Area Code Time Zone (Pacific Time)

California lies entirely in the Pacific Time Zone, so every 415 and 628 number runs on Pacific Time. San Francisco uses Pacific Daylight Time (PDT, UTC-7) from the second Sunday in March to the first Sunday in November and Pacific Standard Time (PST, UTC-8) the rest of the year.

415 and 628: The Overlay Code

Area code 628 is not a separate region. It is an overlay, a second code on exactly the same map as 415, added because 415 prefixes were running out. Nobody had to change numbers: existing lines kept 415, and new lines could draw from 628.

The CPUC phased it in. Beginning February 21, 2015, calls from 415 numbers had to be dialed as 1 + area code + number, and 628 numbers could be issued beginning March 21, 2015. The Commission said the new dialing would not change existing numbers or what a call costs.

A 628 number is as local as a 415 number, since the two share one local calling area; it simply came from the newer pool. The CPUC's 415/628 area code page still lists the dialing rules.

Is 415 a Country Code? What That Search Really Means

No. Area code 415 in the USA is part of the North American Numbering Plan, not a country code. The country code in front of it is +1, which the United States shares with Canada and several Caribbean countries.

Because two codes share one area, ten-digit dialing is mandatory in 415 and 628, and landlines need the leading 1 as well. The CPUC's rule for calls from 415 or 628 numbers is 1 + area code + seven-digit number, and a local call stays local.
