It also reaches into southern Middlesex County: Plainsboro, Cranbury, parts of South Brunswick including Kingston, and the far southern edge of Monroe.

• January 20, 2018: permissive dialing began; seven-digit calls still went through.
• August 18, 2018: ten-digit dialing became mandatory, and seven-digit calls reached a recording asking callers to redial.
• September 17, 2018: new lines could start receiving 640 numbers.

The overlay also ended an exception from 1999. Some neighboring 609 and 856 exchanges had kept seven-digit dialing between them through central office code protection, which the BPU ordered removed, so calls between 609 and 856 now need 1 plus the area code.

How 609 Was Created: The 1956 and 1999 Splits

In the first nationwide numbering plan, drawn up in 1947, all of New Jersey shared code 201. In 1956 the state was divided to create 609, roughly along the line between North Jersey, near New York City, and South Jersey, near Philadelphia and the Shore, though calls within the state were dialed without an area code until July 21, 1963. By the late 1990s, cell phones and pagers meant South Jersey needed another code. On June 14, 1999, the southwestern part of 609, including most of the New Jersey side of the Philadelphia area, moved to 856, with 609 still accepted for those numbers until November 14.

Is 609 a Country Code? What That Search Really Means

No. 609 is an area code, not a country code. The United States uses country code 1, shared with Canada and the rest of the North American Numbering Plan, so a 609 number written for international callers begins +1 609, for example +1 609 555 0142.

The mix-up often comes from a full international number, where +1 609 reads like one long foreign prefix. A number starting +60 9 is different: +60 is Malaysia's country code, and 9 is the landline area code for Kelantan, Terengganu and Pahang. A New Jersey number always has the 1 before 609.

Three-digit numbers still work: 911, plus 211, 311, 411, 511, 611, 711 and 811. The notice also confirms that a local call stays local however many digits you dial, and that call prices and coverage didn't change.
