It wasn't always this compact. Under the 1947 plan, 801 covered the entire state. As Utah added phone lines, the code ran short of numbers, and in 1997 everything outside the Wasatch Front moved to the new 435 area code. Today 435 serves places such as St. George, Cedar City, Logan and Delta, while 801 keeps the five metro counties.

Within those counties, 801 has company. The 385 code overlays the same map, so next-door neighbors can hold an 801 number and a 385 number. The digits show which pool a number came from, not a different part of the valley.

Cities and Counties in the 801 Area Code

The 801 region is made up of five whole counties. Salt Lake County holds the state capital, Utah County to the south includes Provo and Orem, and Davis, Weber and Morgan counties carry the region north toward Ogden.

801 Area Code Time Zone (Mountain Time)

All of the 801 area code is on Mountain Time. Winter clocks read Mountain Standard Time (UTC−7), and from March to November Utah moves to Mountain Daylight Time (UTC−6).

Daylight saving time is what trips people up in this part of the country. Utah changes its clocks, but most of Arizona does not, so Salt Lake City and Phoenix show the same time in winter and are an hour apart in summer. The Navajo Nation, which reaches into southeastern Utah, follows daylight saving time to stay in step with Utah and New Mexico.

The 1997 split did not settle things for long. By 2007, the Public Service Commission of Utah expected 801 to run out of available numbers by June 2008, so the Wasatch Front needed another code.

In July 2007 the commission chose an overlay instead of another split. Rather than drawing a new border through the region, it assigned 385 to the same five counties, which meant no one in Weber, Morgan, Davis, Salt Lake or Utah County had to change an existing number.

The change came in two steps. During a permissive period in 2008, local calls went through whether you dialed seven digits or ten. Starting March 1, 2009, ten digits became mandatory, and new lines could begin receiving 385 numbers that spring.

Plenty of real calls come from 801 numbers: clinics, schools, delivery drivers, employers. The catch is that caller ID shows whatever number a caller chooses to send. The FTC describes scammers using spoofed numbers that appear to belong to a government agency, or that match your own area code.

• You're pushed to decide on the spot, with no time to talk it over with anyone.
• The caller wants money in a form that's hard to trace, such as gift cards, a wire transfer or cryptocurrency.
• You're asked to confirm a password, a Social Security number or a code texted to your phone.
• A recording tells you to press 1 to reach a representative.
• The caller gets angry or threatening when you say you'll call back.
• The request doesn't match how that bank, employer or agency normally reaches you, even if the name on caller ID looks official.
