The New York State Department of Public Service (DPS) describes the 845 region as serving the Hudson Valley and Catskills, with a county list that runs from Rockland and Putnam up to Columbia and Greene.

Until June 5, 2000, this territory used 914. NANPA's records show 845 entering service that day with 914 as its parent code. The DPS still counts part of Westchester County in the 845 region, so the split didn't follow county lines exactly.

• July 16, 2022: dialing 988 begins reaching the national crisis lifeline.
• March 24, 2023: new lines, additional lines and moved services can start receiving 329 numbers.

Because ten-digit dialing was already in place, the overlay didn't change how anyone dialed. The DPS announcement listed what else stayed the same: current numbers kept their area code, local calls stayed local, and prices didn't change because of 329.

The same notice said 329 numbers would not be assigned until the remaining 845 numbers were exhausted. In other words, which code a new line receives depends on the supply of 845 numbers at the time.
