41 Area Code: Where Calls From +41 and 041 Come From

Introduction

If you searched for the 41 area code, you probably have a missed call, a text or a business card showing +41, 0041 or 041. None of those is an American area code. All three point to Switzerland: 41 is the country's international calling code, and 041 is one of its regional codes, used in Central Switzerland around Lucerne.

Is 41 a US Area Code?

No. The United States, Canada and the other members of the North American Numbering Plan (NANP) use three-digit area codes, and the first of those digits runs from 2 to 9. A 0 or 1 in that spot is reserved as a trunk prefix, which is why no US area code begins with either one. A two-digit code like 41 doesn't fit the pattern at all.

Every NANP number shares country code 1. Written for international use, a US number is +1, a three-digit area code and a seven-digit local number. +41 Is Switzerland's Country Code

Which country uses 41? Switzerland. The plus sign in +41 stands in for the caller's exit code, and because Switzerland's own international prefix is 00, Swiss companies sometimes print their numbers as 0041.

The Swiss plan is administered by the Federal Office of Communications (OFCOM, or BAKOM in German). It is a closed plan: a regular number has ten digits in national form, written 0xx xxx xx xx, and callers must include the area code even for a local call, a rule in place since 29 March 2002. What 041 Means Inside Switzerland

Add a zero and the meaning changes. In Switzerland, 0 is the trunk prefix placed in front of every national destination code, the official Swiss name for an area code. So the 041 area code is not the country code with an extra digit. It is the regional code for Central Switzerland, which takes in the cantons of Lucerne, Uri, Schwyz, Obwalden, Nidwalden and Zug.

A landline in that region is written 041 xxx xx xx by people in Switzerland and +41 41 xxx xx xx for callers abroad. The doubled 41 looks like a typing error, but it is correct: the first 41 is the country, the second is the region, and the 0 has been dropped.

The code took its current shape on 23 March 1996, when the older codes 042 (Zug), 043 (Schwyz), 044 (Altdorf) and 045 (Sursee) were merged into 041. Codes 043 and 044 were later reused for Zurich.

Swiss Area Codes at a Glance

Mobile numbers keep the ten-digit layout, so 079 xxx xx xx becomes +41 79 xxx xx xx abroad. Codes such as 079 (Swisscom), 076 (Sunrise) and 078 (Salt) began with one network, but people can keep their number when they switch, so the code no longer shows the operator.

How to Call a +41 Number From the US

Is a Call From +41 a Scam?

A +41 prefix says nothing about whether a call is honest, since Swiss banks, hotels and relatives all have ordinary reasons to phone the US. Judge the call by how it behaves, not where it comes from.

One pattern worth knowing is the one-ring call. As the FTC explains, the phone rings once from an unfamiliar number in the hope that you'll call back. The number is actually an international toll line, so the charge lands on your bill and most of that money goes to the scammer.

• Don't return a call from an unknown international number just because it rang once.
• Treat pressure to act immediately, requests for payment, or requests for a code sent to your phone as warning signs.
• If the caller says they're from a Swiss company you deal with, hang up and call the number on its official website or your paperwork.
• Check your next phone bill for international charges you don't recognize.
