Area code 512 sits in the middle of Texas, centered on Austin. It reaches north into Williamson County, south along the corridor through Kyle and San Marcos, east to Bastrop and Elgin, and west to Spicewood and the town of Burnet.

Several codes surround it. San Antonio and its region use the 210 area code, while 830 serves towns such as New Braunfels, Boerne and Kerrville. Waco and Killeen to the north use the 254 area code, the Bryan and College Station area to the east uses 979, 325 lies to the north and west, and 361 covers Corpus Christi to the south.

If a 512 phone number area code shows up on your caller ID, the number was issued for this part of Texas. People often keep a cell number after relocating, however, so the caller is not necessarily in Central Texas today.

Cities and Counties in the 512 Area Code

The counties served by 512 and 737 are Bastrop, Burnet, Caldwell, Hays, Milam, Travis and Williamson. The code also reaches the city of Lampasas, the seat of Lampasas County. Here are some of the best-known cities, matched to their counties.

Smaller communities with 512 numbers include Bee Cave, Buda, Dripping Springs, Elgin, Hutto, Jarrell, Lakeway, Leander, Liberty Hill, Manor, Smithville, Spicewood, Taylor and Wimberley. Round Rock and Cedar Park cross into Travis County, and San Marcos extends into Caldwell County.

The same list applies to 737, because the two codes have identical boundaries. A Leander business could have a 512 main line and a 737 fax or cell number without leaving its office.

512 Area Code Time Zone (Central Time)

Austin and the rest of the 512 area keep Central Time. The only parts of Texas outside the Central Time Zone are El Paso and Hudspeth counties and a corner of Culberson County, all at the state's far western edge.

From early November to mid-March the clock is Central Standard Time, or UTC−6. On the second Sunday in March, Texas moves to Central Daylight Time, UTC−5, and it goes back on the first Sunday in November.

Chicago and all of Illinois are in the same zone, so Austin and Chicago always show the same time. Places on Eastern Time are one hour ahead, so a 9 a.m. start in Austin is already 10 a.m. there.

512 and 737: The Overlay Code

When area codes were introduced in 1947, 512 covered most of south-central Texas, from the Gulf of Mexico to the Mexican border. Besides Austin, it included San Antonio, Corpus Christi, Brownsville, Harlingen and McAllen. That map stayed in place for 45 years.

In 1992 the western part of the territory, including San Antonio and the Rio Grande Valley, became area code 210, making 512 the last of Texas's four original codes to be split. The larger city usually keeps the old code, but Austin held on to 512, sparing state government offices the cost of changing their numbers and printed materials. On February 13, 1999, the southern portion around Corpus Christi became 361, leaving 512 close to its current size.

Corpus Christi's 512 years left a mark in music. In January 1995, Selena released "El Chico del Apartamento 512," a title that refers to the area code the city used at the time.

Rather than split 512 again, Texas chose an overlay. Area code 737 was introduced over the same territory in July 2013, heading off exhaustion that had been expected by the end of that year. Existing 512 numbers did not change, and new numbers can come from either code.

How to Tell If a Call From 512 Is Legitimate

Seeing an Austin number does not mean an Austin caller. The FTC warns that caller ID can be made to show any number, and scammers often choose one that looks local so you are more likely to pick up. What the caller says tells you far more than the 512 in front of it.

Keep in mind that scammers do not honor the registry, so blocking repeat numbers on your phone, or through your carrier's blocking service, is the more direct fix.

With two codes on the same ground, the network needs the area code to know which of two identical seven-digit numbers you mean. Ten-digit dialing within the 512 territory was phased in starting December 2012 and became mandatory in June 2013, a month before 737 numbers arrived.
