Since September 2023, 480, 602 and 623 no longer have separate borders, so a new 480 number can be issued anywhere in the Valley.

Where Is the 480 Area Code?
Area code 480 is in south-central Arizona, in the Phoenix metropolitan area that locals call the Valley, and it is centered on Maricopa County. When it went into service, it took most of the East Valley and the Town of Paradise Valley, while most of the city of Phoenix kept 602 and the West Valley moved to 623.
That older map still explains why so many people connect 480 with Mesa or Scottsdale. It no longer limits where numbers go, though. Under the boundary elimination overlay that took effect in 2023, new lines anywhere in the former 480, 602 and 623 areas can receive a 480, 602 or 623 number alike.
So a 480 number tells you the line was issued somewhere in greater Phoenix, not which neighborhood, or even that the caller still lives in Arizona.

Before 2023, the 480 map was the eastern side of the Valley. The table below groups communities named in numbering and carrier notices for the Phoenix codes. Every one of them can now receive 480, 602 or 623 numbers.

480 Area Code Time Zone (Mountain Standard Time)
The 480 area code runs on Mountain Standard Time (MST) every day of the year. Arizona lawmakers exempted the state from daylight saving time in 1968. The measure, Senate Bill 1, took effect when Governor Jack Williams signed it on March 21, 1968, and it is now Arizona Revised Statutes §1-242.
MST sits at UTC−7. In practice, Phoenix shows the same time as Denver and Salt Lake City in winter. Once those cities spring forward for daylight saving time and Arizona stays put, Phoenix matches Los Angeles and Seattle instead.
The one exception sits far from the East Valley: the Navajo Nation, in northeastern Arizona, observes daylight saving time so its clocks match its communities in Utah and New Mexico.
480, 602 and 623: One Area, Three Area Codes
Under the 1947 numbering plan, 602 was Arizona's lone area code, and it stayed that way until 1995, when 520 took over the state outside metropolitan Phoenix. Growth in the 1990s used up the Valley's numbers faster than planners expected. In December 1998 the Arizona Corporation Commission approved a three-way split, effective March 1, 1999: the East Valley became 480, the West Valley became 623, and most of Phoenix kept 602.
The split did not break up the Valley's calling area, so calls between the three codes generally stayed local. By the early 2020s, though, 480 was forecast to run out of central office codes in the first quarter of 2024, while 623 still had room. Rather than add a fourth code, the telecom industry recommended erasing the lines between the three.
The Commission adopted that Boundary Elimination Overlay in Decision No. 78311 in November 2021. Callers in 602 and 623 could begin dialing ten digits on February 11, 2023, ten digits became mandatory on August 12, 2023, and the boundaries came down on September 12, 2023. Nobody's existing number changed.
480 reached ten-digit dialing earlier. It was one of 82 area codes the FCC required to switch because 988, reserved nationwide for the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline, was also in use there as a local prefix. The West Valley's code has its own write-up in our 623 area code guide.
Is 480 a Country Code? What That Search Really Means
No. The digits 480 identify part of Arizona, not a nation. Country codes come before the area code: the United States and Canada share +1 under the North American Numbering Plan, and the three digits after it name an area within that plan. A Phoenix-area number therefore reads +1 480 in international format.

480 Area Code vs ZIP Codes
There is no such thing as a 480 ZIP code. Area codes come from the telephone numbering plan, while the US Postal Service assigns ZIP Codes to deliver mail, and the two maps were drawn independently. Since the overlay, one Phoenix-area ZIP Code can contain numbers from all three codes.

How to Tell If a Call From 480 Is Legitimate (Spam Calls)

How to Dial a 480 Phone Number
Every local call in the Phoenix area needs the area code. Since August 12, 2023, a call dialed with only seven digits won't complete anywhere in 480, 602 or 623, and you'll hear a recording telling you to include the area code. A call that was local before the change is still local.
