Introduction

A Bangladesh phone number is built from three pieces: the country code +880, an operator or area code, and the subscriber number. When a call is placed inside Bangladesh, the number starts with the trunk prefix 0, then the area or operator code, then the subscriber number. When the same number is written for someone abroad, +880 takes the place of that 0. The codes themselves come from the National Numbering Plan issued by the Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC), and the current plan is dated 31 July 2017.

Mobile Operator Prefixes

In a Bangladeshi mobile number, the digit after 01 is the operator code. Each code was handed to one operator, and two operators now have a second series because their first one filled up. Grameenphone, for example, added 013 after running through 017.

Treat the prefix as a record of where a number started, not proof of who serves it today. Mobile number portability (MNP) was introduced in 2018, and a customer who moves to another operator keeps the whole number, prefix and all. A number beginning 017 could now be on Robi or Banglalink.

The 016 series has its own history. Airtel Bangladesh merged into Robi on 16 November 2016, the 016 numbers now sit under Robi's licence, and Robi markets those former Airtel lines under its Cirkle brand.

Landline Area Codes: Dhaka, Chattogram and More

Landlines from BTCL (Bangladesh Telecommunications Company Limited) come in two formats. The older one uses a geographic code for each district: 02 for Dhaka, and three- or four-digit codes starting with 0 almost everywhere else. Some reference tables still use the older spelling Chittagong for the city whose official name is Chattogram.

Newer BTCL numbers drop the district code in favor of five zone codes, written as +880 2, a zone digit and the subscriber number. Locally they read 02XXX-XXXXXX, and the third digit tells you the zone:

• 022, Central zone: Dhaka City, Narayanganj City, Gazipur City, Narsingdi City, Tongi and Tungipara.
• 023, South-East zone: Chittagong, Chandpur, Feni and Comilla districts and nearby districts.
• 024, South-West zone: Khulna and Barishal districts and nearby districts.
• 025, North-West zone: Rajshahi and Rangpur districts and nearby districts.
• 029, North-East zone: Sylhet, Mymensingh, Manikganj, Sherpur and Jamalpur districts and nearby districts.

Private fixed-line operators have separate codes, such as 066 for Dhaka Phone and 036 for Telebarta. Their numbers follow the pattern +880 XX and then eight digits.

Bangladesh Phone Number Examples

Each example below replaces the subscriber digits with X, so none of them points to a real person. Use the local column for contacts saved in a Bangladeshi phone and the international column for email signatures, websites and CRM records shared across countries.

Counting digits catches most typing errors in a mobile number. A correct one has 11 digits with its leading 0, or 10 digits after +880. Eleven digits after +880 usually means the 0 was left in, as in +880 017..., and the number needs trimming.

A few short numbers work without any prefix. The short codes to know are 999 for emergency services, 333 for the central helpline and 121 for mobile operator customer care.

How to Call a Bangladesh Number From the US

Dial 011, the international access code used across the North American Numbering Plan, then 880, then the Bangladeshi number without its 0.
